Messages between agents
Agent messaging is useful when one role has information that another role needs to discuss with a person. For example, a scheduling assistant can ask a patient’s assistant to offer a new appointment time. The receiving assistant decides what to say to its person under its own instructions.
Enable a specific destination
In agent settings, open Allow messages to other agents and choose only the agents the sender needs. Eligible destinations can include other computers on the same account while connected. Messaging is disabled by default and is directional.
catalex agents list
catalex agents edit SENDER_AGENT_ID --delegate-to RECEIVER_AGENT_ID
The list replaces the sender’s previous allowed destinations. Use --delegate-to none to disable all. A removed or unavailable destination cannot receive messages. Avoid reciprocal or chained routes: a received delegation cannot become a loop through other agents.
Route through the receiving agent
The flow is sender → receiving agent → person. Give the sender enough context and identify the intended person through the receiving agent’s supported contact reference. Do not copy private details into another person’s chat to work around an unknown identity.
A terminal operator can inspect catalex delegations send --help, status and list. send needs the sender ID, destination contact (--to) or receiving native chat (--to-chat), message and stable idempotency key. Retry with the same key after a lost reply.
Accepted or queued means the handoff was recorded. It does not mean the receiving agent spoke to the person. Verify the receiving conversation and actual recipient delivery separately. This matters for appointment notices and other time-sensitive messages.
Test before using it for real people
Use test conversations for both roles. Send one allowed message, confirm the receiving agent’s response, and verify a disallowed sender is refused. Keep each role in its own folder with its own tool permissions. Per-person tools must select the right identity for each chat.
